Ancient civilizations believed that the world was set upon an enormous sapphire, which painted the sky blue with its reflection.
This legend, as well as the belief that the ten commandments were inscribed upon tablets made of sapphire, gives September’s birthstone a royal place among gemstones. Named after the Greek word "sapphirus", meaning blue, Sapphires have long been a favorite among priests and kings, who considered them symbolic of wisdom and purity. These gemstones are prominent among the British Crown Jewels,
and Prince Charles chose this as the engagement stone for his fiancée, Princess Diana.
In ancient times, Sapphires were thought to be protective against envy, and even against poisoning.
A common belief was that a venomous snake placed in a Sapphire vessel would rapidly die!
Ground to a powder, the blue stone was believed to cure colic, rheumatism and mental illness, and to strengthen eyesight.

The Sapphire is second only to the Diamond in hardness, making it a durable gemstone for setting into jewelry.  A gift of Sapphire represents sincerity and faithfulness. As nourishing to the soul as gazing up at the sky on a summer day, this brilliant blue gemstone is truly a heavenly choice!

THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Fellow citizens, why do you turn and scrape every stone
to gather wealth and take so little care of your children,
to whom one day you must relinquish it all.
                                                      – Socrates

The Fourth Object of Kiwanis: To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

Kiwanis Education #62 : Kiwanis International does not “grade” club reports or award points for specific club activities. Grading plans are administered by districts to promote club excellence. Questions or proposals regarding district grading plans should be directed to the district secretary or your division’s lieutenant governor, who is also a member of the district board. Kiwanis International does analyze annual club reports to obtain important statistical information about Kiwanis membership and service and to select clubs for special awards.

THIS WEEK...

Our meeting this week was a board meeting held at the St. Martin Parish Court Building.  Next week we will be back at the Sheriff’s Office for our meetings.
Mary Arton brought PF tee shirts for members to look at the different color options.  Mary and her committee will make the final decision on colors and bring that to the PF committee meeting for us to begin ordering.

Pepper Festival Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00 at Gerry and Dennis’ house -321 Broussard Dr.  Please make every effort to attend.

Members of the Installation Banquet Committee are as follows:  Gloria Polite, Jean Potier, Dennis LeBlanc, Gerry LeBlanc, Peggy Hardy.  We will have a committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. prior to the PF committee meeting on September 10.

Elaine St. Julien announced that because of her job, she will no longer be able to be the Builders Club advisor.  We are asking for someone to take on that responsibility.  The Builders Club meets once a month  at 1:00 p.m. on the 2nd Friday of every month.

Incoming President, Larry Roy, announced that he will meet the ELC Principal Jessica to firm up plans for KRIS (Kiwanians Reading In Schools).  Volunteers are needed to help read to the kids at ELC.   You may ask non-Kiwanians, retired teachers, AARP members, your neighbor, your co-worker – all good sources to assist in reading at school.

I have obtained more information on the goat project.  Goats are $50 apiece and what the New Iberia Kiwanis Club is doing, they are matching donations from individuals with monies from their coffers.  So, if you’re interested in purchasing a milking goat (or combining with another Kiwanian to purchase one), these goats are for a mission project to provide milk to Haitian children.  Our incoming Lt. Gov. Philip deMahy, will come to give us more information on this project sometime in September.

Our club has voted to purchase  an AED for Trinity Catholic School.

Dennis LeBlanc, Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, will be our speaker next week.  Can you guess the topic??  It starts with an H.

Remember: We have a lot of fish to fry... in Kiwanis!
