THOUGHT/QUOTE
OF THE WEEK:
A tree is known by
its fruit; a man by his deeds.
A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps
friendship,
and he who plants kindness gathers
love.
— St. Basil the Great |

The
First Object of Kiwanis:
To give primacy to the human and spiritual,
rather than to the material values of life.
Kiwanis
Education #24:
The creation of a Kiwanis International
Foundation was proposed in 1937 by International President F. Trafford
Taylor. The foundation was publicly launched at Kiwanis International’s
25th anniversary celebration in Detroit in 1940. Walter Zeller, past
governor of the Ontario-Quebec-Maritime District, initiated the
foundation’s funds by donating 25 US silver dollars. These were used to
decorate the anniversary cake, and slices were auctioned for a total of
$5625. Today, the Kiwanis International Foundation receives more than $1
million each year in donations and bequests (plus Worldwide Service
Project donations).
THIS
WEEK:
Carol Lagarde is the only member admitting to getting
up early for a non-existent morning meeting on Wednesday. The great thing
is that we had a packed house on Wednesday evening for our first monthly
evening meeting of this year. Although as several people came in the
door, there was grumbling heard about it being too late for them. Each
month we will have an evening meeting on the FIRST WEDNESDAY. Please make
a note. We’ll try to remind you.
One of the reasons our meeting was so well attended was
that most of us are gamblers at heart and lottery is a whopping $138.
Margot had a 50/50 chance of winning but came up with the last yellow
stone in the bag. After much discussion and a vote, it was decided that
next week we will have the opportunity to pull the single (red) stone out
of the bag. Some people wanted to throw all of the yellow stones back in
the bag for next meeting. They were outvoted by the rest of the members.
So when you come to next Wednesday’s morning meeting, and you purchase a
lottery ticket, if Paul pulls your number, you will be the winner of the
jackpot.
Also at the meeting, the board agreed to have pizza
parties for both Key Club and Builders Club. Key Club has a designated
Key Club Week in November. Builders Club has no such designation but our
Kiwanis members voted to honor “Builders Club Week” also.
Gerry announced that three prospective members of the
proposed Acadiana HomeSchool Key Club will be attending the Key Leader
weekend coming up on Nov. 7.
We had no Key Club members from SMSH who were
interested in attending. Part of the problem was that this weekend is
Homecoming at SMSH.
Marti was recognized as Kiwanian of the Month for
Division 17 by Gov. David Pickler and received a certificate at the
meeting from President Dennis.
Our guest speaker was Jennifer Manusak of “Driving
Louisiana Forward”. Driving Louisiana Forward is a statewide campaign
organized by businesses and interested parties committed to improving
Louisiana’s highway infrastructure. If you want more information, visit

President’s
Corner
Thanks to all
who came out for our first monthly evening meeting/board meeting.
Committee assignment lists are being circulated and if there is a
particular committee that you would like to chair or participate as a
member of, please let me know; 394-2579 is my office number. We have also
kicked off the “Fish to Fry” game. If you didn’t get your fish or your
stringer, I have both for you at the meetings.
