                                          BIRTHSTONE FOR JUNE - ALEXANDRITE
Alexandrite, "emerald by day, ruby by night," is the birthstone for the month of June (along with the pearl) and the anniversary stone for the 55th year of marriage. It is an extremely rare gemstone (in fact, most people have never seen one) and a fairly modern one to boot, being first discovered in the 19th Century. The name Alexandrite comes from the fact that the gemstone was first discovered in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in Russia’s Ural M
ountains in 1830, on the day of Prince Alexander II of Russia’s birthday.
In 1839, the stones were identified and named "alexandrite" because the stones appeared green or red, the same colors as Old Imperial Russia’s military colors and the stone became the national stone of tsarist Russia.
Since the discovery of alexandrite, the gemstone has been thought to bring luck, good fortune and love. Alexandrite encourages romance and is said that through the stone, joy enters the lives of people with too much self-discipline. With its changing color, it is a reminder
that life is not always what it seems to be.

THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

Be silent as to services you have rendered,
but speak of favours you have received.
                    --  Seneca
(5BC – 65AD)

The First Object of Kiwanis:  To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.

Kiwanis Education #52 :   Club bylaws prevent the club from being used for any political purpose or, as a club, from actively participating in the political candidacy of any person. But this does not mean that the club cannot take an interest in public affairs. Article XIV, Section 1, of the Standard Form for Club Bylaws states, “This club shall seek, by fair discussions at its meetings and in other ways, to keep its members informed on all questions of public importance and any proposed legislation affecting the community, state, province, or nation in which this club is located.” Equal time is normally given to opposing political candidates or supporters on each side of controversial issues.

THIS WEEK.... AND LAST WEEK, TOO!

Sorry guys, I couldn’t find my way out of a paper bag for the last two weeks.  We did manage to have Kiwanis meetings in spite of my personal chaos.  We had a board meeting and a regular meeting.  At this last meeting, Dan Berard was our guest speaker and told us amusing antidotes about his camping trip with his grandson, Jacob.  Dan had a wealth of information for us and made geography and history very interesting.  Now where was he when I was in high school ….

Annie Durand’s husband, Ed, underwent surgery last week.  The report I get is that he went through surgery well.  Please keep both of them in your thoughts and prayers.

If you are planning to attend the district convention at Sea next year, please call Jean Potier or Dennis LeBlanc for more information OR you can go online at www.lamisstenn.org and get the information you need to register.  If you register prior to June 20 you are eligible for a chance to win a free cabin for two.

This year’s district convention will be held in New Orleans at the Ritz Carlton.  If you would like to attend and would like your own sleeping accommodations, please make your reservations.  We are reserving two rooms with double beds for guys and ladies who are interested in attending.

See you in the funny papers!
