   FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS

Gerry LeBlanc 2/10 • Dr. Daniel Wiltz 2/14 • Peggy Hardy 2/22

Amethyst is the official birthstone for February as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912.
It's also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Pisces. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family.  It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Top quality amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness; the ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It is also thought be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain.
Some sources suggest it is used to stabilize mental disorders. Worn to make the wearer gentle and amiable.
Amethyst powers include: dreams, healing, peace, love, spiritual upliftment, courage,  psychism, protection against thieves, and happiness.
Ranking members of the Roman Catholic Church traditionally wear rings set with a large amethyst as part of their office.

THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life
that no man can sincerely try to help another
        without helping himself.
            Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Third Object of Kiwanis:  To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

Kiwanis Education #35:  All solicitations for funds by a Kiwanis club must be confined to the area in which the club functions, except by mutual agreement of clubs in a division, district, or area of solicitation. No member, club, or commercial enterprise may circularize for sale any product or service, solicit funds, or promote any program or project to Kiwanis clubs or members within a district without prior approval of the district board, or outside the district without prior approval of the International Board.

THIS WEEK:  Meeting attendance was very light this week.  I don’t know if the reason was the cold weather, something too good to miss on TV, other commitments,  brain cramp and forgot … or what!  Regardless, Annie did a wonderful job conducting the meeting in the President’s absence.  Good Job, Annie!  Can we sign you up for President-Elect?

Margaret Richard started off her month of guest speakers with a bang.  Arlene Arceneaux, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana was our guest speaker.  If you were unaware, Kiwanis International has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club in order for us to support and assist this worthwhile cause for children.  And with Arlene’s presentation, we could see that this is right up our alley.  We will decide at next month’s board meeting how we can best assist with Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana.

Board Meeting Notes:  The following items were taken up at the board meeting phase of Wednesday night’s meeting.
Annie presented her report as secretary and it was accepted as presented by the board members in attendance.
Peggy presented the financial report and it was accepted as presented by the board members in attendance.
Jean and Peggy report on the Super Bowl party.  We netted $16 for the administrative account after all bills were paid.
Gerry reported that she will chair the Pepper Festival this year with the outstanding support group that is in place.
Gerry requested funds for city beautification in the amount of $125 to plant knock-out roses at the entrance signs.  Motion passed.
Gerry reported on the Acadiana Home School Key Club progress, stating that they are still lacking the number necessary to charter the Key Club but are still working to get members.
Gerry also asked the club to purchase solar panels to warm the city pool for ECAS.  She will find out how many panels it will take for the City pool and get back to the club. The possibility of members of the City Council and other entities contributing was also discussed.
It was also brought up that election of officers will be coming up and we still have no one in line to be president next year.  Gerry stressed the importance of Dennis not having to take on the presidency another year.
Peggy reported that she will be sending $41 collected during the months of December and January “from the Heart” to the District Foundation.
