The Third Object of Kiwanis:
To promote the adoption
and the application of higher social, business, and professional
standards.
Kiwanis Education #59:
The
European Federation of Kiwanis International is composed of the eight
districts and nondistricted areas of Europe: the Iceland-Faroes, Norden,
Netherlands, Belgium-Luxemburg, France-Monaco, Switzerland-Liechtenstein,
Germany, Austria, and Italy districts, and areas such as the Iberian
peninsula and eastern Europe. The European Federation has more than 1,000
clubs and stages an annual convention to elect federation officers and
promote Kiwanis goals and training.
This Week:
Great time
had by all at the Kiwanis meeting. You should make the effort to get to a
Wednesday morning meeting – it gives the day and week such a lift! Guest
speakers at our meeting were representatives of Big Brothers/Big Sisters
of Acadiana – Ginger Collier, Sharon Landry and Phillip James, Community
Coordinator who resides and works in St. Martinville. Basically there are
several options to participate in the Big Brother/Big Sister program:
-
Community
based program which offers a commitment of at least twice a month for at
least one hour where you are matched with a child of similar interests and
you spend time together
- School based program where your commitment is
in the school, one hour per week where you get together with the kids
- High School Bigs program where high
school kids are matched to primary school kids
- Amachi (West African word meaning “who
knows but what God has brought us through this child?”) Program which
provides one-on-one mentoring for children with incarcerated parents.
If you would like to be a volunteer, call Phillip James at 394-4472 or you
can check out their website at
www.acadiana@bigs.com
Gerry is asking for help on a project. K-Bar-B Youth Ranch is located in
Lacombe, LA and is a residential treatment facility for abused and
neglected children, who have been placed in the foster system. Since
foster children are near and dear to our hearts, we would like to extend
assistance to this facility. The Kiwanis Club of New Orleans purchased 75
acres of land in 1946 to open a summer camp for underprivileged children.
Since 1973, the ranch has been dedicated to treating abused children. One
of the items needed for each child is a journal. If you would like to
contribute either $$$ or journals, you can do so within the next two
weeks. Gerry will package and ship the items all at one time. (There are
inexpensive journals to be purchased at CVS or the dollar stores.)
Key Club Week is being celebrated on Friday at St. Martinville Sr. High in
the library at 11:15 p.m. If you would like to help with this project by
attending the meeting and helping serve pizza and soft drinks, call Gerry
@380-4300 or show up at school!
Our thoughts and prayers are with Kiwanian Calie Latiolais who is having
surgery on Thursday, 11/15. |
