THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Every person must have a concern for self, and feel a responsibility to discover one’s mission in life. God has given each normal person a capacity to achieve some end. True, some are endowed with more talent than others, but God has left none of us without talent. Potential powers of creativity are within us, and we have a duty to work assiduously to discover these powers.
-- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Third Object of Kiwanis: To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

Kiwanis Education #63:  Builders Club is a Kiwanis-sponsored service club for students in junior high and middle schools. Each Builders Club is a local project of its sponsoring Kiwanis club, and there is no district or International Builders Club structure. More than 1,000 Builders Clubs currently are sponsored by Kiwanis clubs to provide service and leadership experiences to junior high and middle school students.

THIS WEEK Our guest speaker this week was our Lt. Gov. Alyson Baird.  Alison gave us more information on the District Project which – if you haven’t been listening – is that the La.-Miss.-W.Tenn. District of Kiwanis is partnering with Zoll Medical, the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross, to place AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in ALL schools in Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee. This ambitious undertaking may take some time, but will raise the standard of heart safety in our regions’ schools.  The cost of each is approx. $1,500 and includes monitoring by Zoll Medical.

One of the ways we can raise the money for these AEDs is by having partnerships within our communities with some of the larger businesses.  If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved, contact local chairs Dennis and Steve.
Alyson also encouraged the attendance at our first ever Regional Summit which is taking the place of the Mid Winter Conference. Seven people from our club will be attending.   She also announced the split of Division 17 into two new Divisions – new 17 which will include Pont Breaux, St. Martinville, New Iberia, Iberia Cajun and Jeanerette; and 19 which will include E. St. Mary, Houma, Thibodaux, and South LaFourche.  Gerry LeBlanc will be the Lt. Gov. for Division 17 for the 08-09 year.

On Sunday, we will have our annual Kiwanis Family Brunch at Clambeaugh’s Restaurant.  This is an opportunity for members of Kiwanis to interact with members and their families of both Builders and Key Clubs.  Should be an awesome event.

Superbowl Sunday is around the corner.  You are welcome to invite guests/prospective members to the celebration.  The game begins around 5:00 p.m. but socializing can begin anytime in the afternoon.  Remember to plan for the Newcomer’s Parade and make travel plans accordingly.  We will have the football squares at the meeting next Wednesday for you to participate in the pool (swimming, that is).  Please be advised that Dan is bringing free beer to the Super Bowl and we will have chili to eat.  We are asking for $5 per person as an internal fundraiser for our club.  Where else can you go to enjoy good food, good beer and good friends for that price?
