The First
Object of Kiwanis:
To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to
the material values of life.
New Member: We would like to welcome our newest member, Mr. James
Trosclair, who was inducted in on May 23rd. He is sponsored
by his daughter, Peggy Decou.
Scholarship: We are pleased to announce the winner of the Scholarship
at SMSH: Meagan Melancon. Gerry thanked the members of the committee,
Margaret Richard, Carol and Charlar, who had the difficult task to make
the selection. There were 10 applications.
Kiwanis Bucks: Elaine reminded everyone of her offer for members to
have a chance to beef up their “Kiwanis Bucks” with several incentives.
Speaker getter and greeter through June will receive double bucks;
bringing in a new member through July will also get you double bucks. If
members can cite/write the Kiwanis defining statement at orientation on
May 30, more bucks will be theirs.
New Officer
Training: There will be New Officer Training on June 2nd,
at Bailey’s in Lafayette. You do not have to be an officer or board
member to attend. If you are a semi-new member, (or an old member) and
would like to know more about Kiwanis, think about attending. Please
contact Jean @ 394-9734 if you would like to attend.
ECAS:
Christine was at the meeting to thank/brag on everyone who turned out to
help with another successful season of Every Child A Swimmer. The final
day was dampened by tornado warnings, so the volunteers went to ELC to
go over more safety tips with the little ones and to hand out their
t-shirts.
Program/May 16: Jay Neü with Foster Care Recruitment talked to us
about the need for more Foster parents. He quoted many statistics, one of
the main ones was that there are 5090 children in Foster Care in
Louisiana. He told us that the agency works for about 9 months to one
year to reunite the child with the biological family, and if there is no
success along that line they start the process to terminate parental
rights. The child then becomes available for adoption, because every
child deserves a safe and wholesome environment in which to grow to become
productive citizens.
Program/May 23:
Paul Allain, architect from New Iberia, gave a presentation on the
history of a sunken steamboat that was found at the bottom of Bayou Teche
near the Shadows on the Teche, and their cooperative efforts to keep the
site as an educational tool.
