CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

March 24 – 8:30 Highway Clean Up
March 28 - Regular Kiwanis Meeting

THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Problem solvers are those whose lives are powered by faith and optimism; problem people are those whose lives are drained by doubts and pessimism.  William Arthur Ward

THIS WEEK'S OBJECT OF KIWANISTo promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

KIWANIS EDUCATION:  Iceland has the highest per capita Kiwanis membership among the Kiwanis nations. About one in every 200 Icelanders is a Kiwanian, compared with about one in every 1,000 Americans.

THIS WEEK:  Guests this week were Mr. Jon Porthouse, and Peggy Decou’s dad, Mr. James Trosclair.  He must have brought her some luck since she had a chance at the lottery this week, but only won her dollar back.
Larry reminded everyone of the Highway Clean-up project scheduled for Saturday, March 24, with a delicious pancake breakfast at Larry’s after the job is complete.    Everyone please meet at 8:30 at the Armory or Larry’s house.  He also asked for members to bring some plastic grocery bags.
Gerry has scheduled a meeting immediately after the regular Kiwanis Meeting on March 28th for members who are interested in attending the Kiwanis International Convention in San Antonio, July 3rd - 7th, or the District Convention in New Orleans August 2nd - 5th.  If you would like to attend either of these events and cannot make the meeting, please contact Gerry @ 380-4300.
Audrey informed us that the CIVITAN Club would be doing a raffle this year to raise money for the American Cancer Society - Relay for Life which will be held on April 28th at the SMSH field.  Please contact Annie Durand 394-6239 to participate in this project.

FROM THE RECENT BOARD MEETING:  1) Members voted to sponsor one child’s education fees ($45) for the Goree Island Mission.  We are also collecting toothpaste and toothbrushes to send to approximately 400 children.  Please remember to bring your donations to Carol Lagarde soon, since Danielle and her group will be leaving for Goree on April 9th2) Larry reported that a contract had been signed with the band “Knight Train” to play at the Pepper Festival this year.  3) Christine announced that the dates for Every Child a Swimmer will be May 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23.  She also stated that we will probably have an additional expense of paying for a bus and driver to ferry the children to the swimming pool.

TODAY'S PROGRAM: Standing in for Scott Angelle, the director of the Integrated Planning Team for Coastal Louisiana, Jon Porthouse, spoke to us about coastal issues of our state.  Despite a few technical difficulties which did not rattle him, he gave a very interesting and informative presentation about the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and its efforts to establish a comprehensive master plan for a sustainable coast.  He presented the Club with a copy of the Plan, for us to peruse at our leisure.  At this time it is my possession, but I will bring it to the next meeting for anyone who wishes to take it home for a longer look
