THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:    Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth. -- Shirley Chisholm

THIS WEEK'S OBJECT OF KIWANISTo develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

KIWANIS EDUCATION:  The goal of Kiwanis International’s Worldwide Service Project is to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) as a major world health concern. Iodine is important for proper brain and nervous system development, so iodine deficiency is especially dangerous during prenatal development and early childhood. IDD is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation in the world today.

THIS WEEK
There were no real guests this week, but because of his busy schedule as Parish President Guy Cormier doesn’t get to meet with us very often, so therefore, when he does, we treat him like a special guest since he is very special to us.
The Kiwanis Family Brunch  that was held last Sunday to celebrate  the 92nd  Anniversary of Kiwanis  was a success and everyone had a good time and good food.  A few members shared their Kiwanis moments with the 33 attendees.  Thanks to all who set up, cooked, participated and cleaned up.
The ditty bag project for the NewStart Center is an ongoing project and  good  for this time of year when there are not a lot of  service projects on tap.  Bertha made some little blankets to add to our items in the bags and Leslie donated various items to the collection.  Thanks to them for their generosity.  Following is a list of items that are needed to make more bags:  coloring books, deodorant, toothpaste, playing cards, prayer cards, razors, mouthwash, Wet Ones, infant socks, women’s footies.

PROGRAM: To those who missed Guy ‘s State of the Parish address, you missed an informative explanation of the progress that St. Martin Parish is making under the leadership of our Parish Government.  A few of the many topics he covered were:  the new state of the art 911 system; contributions/appropriations from the State of Louisiana for the Atchafalaya Basin Program, Camp Atchafalaya (for handicap citizens), and the Council on Aging program; the progress on the courthouse project; Industrial Park and Community Center in Cade; a frontage road to be built along I-10 for the BOOMING business in Breaux Bridge. He also had high praise for our Volunteer Fire Department as there are only a very few parishes that have a totally volunteer fire department.  He also mentioned that there is a book of budgeting that is available at the Parish Government office to anyone in the parish who would like to see how our $$$ are being spent.  It seems as though everyone enjoyed the program immensely.
