THIS WEEK'S OBJECT OF KIWANIS: To
provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring
friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better
communities.
THIS WEEK:
Larry announced the 5th Object of Kiwanis, and since
there was no bulletin last week
L,
it matches with this bulletin. There was no lottery today/Paul out of
town.
There was also no Kiwanis Bucks today since Gerry still has them
after the District Mid Winter Conference. A sheet was passed around for
everyone to list their “I.O.U.” bucks that will be distributed next
week. Much scribbling going on with that paper. No one wants to miss out
on their bucks.
Gerry reported and all who
attended Mid Winter concurred, that everyone made the most of the
information shared and had a great time doing it, since this is the
final Conference as we know it.
Awards presented at Mid Winter for 2005-2006 were:
Distinguished Club,
(for which we all received a lapel pin commemorating this honor);
Governor’s Project award for “CASA”; Membership Growth Award
having achieved 10% or more net growth; Service Award for achieving
minimal requirements for this award; Club Administration Award for
achieving and reporting the requirements for this award.
Distinguished Kiwanian for Gerry LeBlanc.
Outstanding Club Secretary Award for Annie Durand.
2005-06 District Inter-Club Contest: District
Chairperson’s award (recognizing the clubs that achieved Phase 1, plus
inter-clubs that reported monthly inter-club visits with other Kiwanis
Clubs and their Sponsored Youth Clubs in 2005-06.)
And last, but not least, Governor Dennis Oliver named our club the
“Most Spirited Club at Mid Winter” in his closing remarks on Sunday!
::::big grin:::::
TODAY'S PROGRAM:
Guest speaker was Danielle Pagitt, Volunteer Coordinator & Media
Specialist for the Acadiana Chapter of the American Red Cross.
She related her story of volunteer service with the Red Cross,
post-Katrina at the Cajundome and the importance of ADVANCE TRAINING for
Red Cross Volunteers.
Now that she has joined the staff of
the organization, she is on a campaign to train volunteers for future
disasters/needs. She has offered a training session to members of our
club who wish to become "certified"
Red Cross
Volunteers. Certified Volunteers will learn the basic skills needed to
handle clients (not "refugees"/"victims"/"evacuees") when you answer the
call to work in a Red Cross shelter and will receive a wallet-card
attesting to your certification so that you can skip on-site
training and go right to work where you're needed.
This will be a two-hour session; date/time/location to be advised, but
will be scheduled to meet our needs (and Danielle has even offered to cook
a spaghetti meal for the event!) Twelve members in attendance signed-up
to be put on the list. If you are interested in more information and/or to
sign up to be notified about the Volunteer Certification Training that
will be
offered to
our club members, contact Marti Harrell, 337/288-2267 or email
marti@hitram.com FYI: Dennis is also working to set-up the same
training for
volunteers in St. Martin parish at a different
time/location if our club training session falls through. Contact Dennis
for details.
